22nd-Feb-2010 03:59 pm - Quick Update
Hey guys! Sign ups are looking good so far, but if you haven't told your friends and/or know somewhere you can pimp this challenge out, go ahead and do so! =D It would be a great help. You can use the banner in the user info or make your own. There's still a week left for sign ups in the prelim round.

Our current entrant count looks like this:

Authors: 6 (two are writing together making the estimated story count 5)
Artists: 3
Betas: 3

I wasn't expecting the biggest turn out so that's fine. But if we have any watchers who haven't signed up yet, and plan to, hurry up. :)

Sign ups will, of course, open up again later officially (for people who have successfully completed rough drafts).

I'll have more info for everyone once prelim sing ups close March 1. Happy drafting!

Xena Big Bang Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Big Bang?

According to all the sources, it is a term that dates back to around 2006 when a group of authors from the Harry Potter fandom who all shipped Harry/Draco got together to write novel length fanfiction. Since then, the idea has been adapted to fit many fandoms, pairings, etc. This particular Big Bang is devoted to the Xena fandom.

What does signing up for this challenge mean for me?

The preliminary sign up is a commitment to attempt to write 15, 000 words by the deadline (for authors) or to create fanworks for said fiction by the deadline (artists). Official sing ups (for authors) are a commitment to: 1. turning in a polished version by the second deadline (August 30, 2010), 2. allowing us the exclusive rights to host the fic, and 3. allowing one or more artists to illustrate scenes of their choosing.

And why exactly do I need to bother with signing up twice?

Basically, the first wave of sign ups is just to see how many people are interested in committing to writing their fics, what sort of pairings, etc we are looking at. However, it is obvious that, throughout the course, we will have people who drop out due to RL reasons, or people who can not meet the minimum word count. This is why we have a second sign up. This second sign up is only for people who are definitely in the challenge with their rough drafts ready.

Why oh why do we have to have a minimum word count?

This point of this challenge is to create fiction that is longer than the typical one shot that you see everyday. The original Big Bang challenge had a 50, 000 word minimum. We've chosen a much smaller minimum for the sake of our sanity. :D

My fic isn't long enough/I don't think I can write that much!

So you've written a fic that's, say, 10, 000 words. Well, that's great. Unfortunately, it does not make you eligible for an artist or our archive. But don't worry. We can work with you to make your fic longer if you would like. Or you may drop out any time before the official sing ups.

If you are interested, but you aren't sure you can write 15, 000 words, go ahead and sign up in the preliminaries. You can always drop out if need be. But we will be posting encouragement and inspiration, so it never hurts to try. We will cheerlead you on, don't worry.

Actually, I like writing extra long fic. My last fic was 60, 000 words long, to be honest. So, do you have a maximum word limit?

No. There is none. Fics can be as much over the word minimum as you'd like. However, please keep in mind the due date.

Oh, yeah. Speaking of that deadline...

Yes, your fic needs to be done by the deadline. If you look at the timeline post, you will see that you have quite a long time to write your fic.

Actually, I have this really cute Xena/Gabrielle story that I'm working on. It has three chapters already posted. Can I just use that?

Sorry, no. All material for this challenge must be new and created for this challenge. Anything that has already been posted in any significant way is off limits. However, say you have a WIP on your hard drive that hasn't been posted anywhere that you want to use. Well, talk to a mod, and we'll see about letting you use that.

Damn. That Xena/Gabby story was really good to, I swear. Oh well, any other limitations?

As is stated in the rules, we do not allow RPF in this challenge. Other than that and making sure everything is properly warned for in your fiction header as well as making sure your fiction has to do with the Xenaverse, there are none.

So no Lucy Lawless/President Bush, okay? No Spongebob Square pants fanfiction, and make sure you warn for the porn. Yes? Yes.

So that means I can write whatever pairing I want?

Slash, het, femmeslash, Gabrielle/Squid, no pairing at all, etc are all allowed.

Can I write a crossover between Xena and Sponge Bob though?

Sure. Corssovers are allowed.

My writing sucks/I'm the best writer in the WORLD!

Either don't worry or good for you. Either way we have beta readers that will going over your work looking at your grammar, plot, characterization, etc. All fiction in this challenge will require a beta reader.

Me and my bff want to write a fic together!

Go ahead. We'd like to know if you are co-authoring, but you can definitely co-author if you'd like.

Oh! Oh! Can I write two fics?

You can, if you'd like. However, we'd like it if you focused on one fic at a time. Get one done really well, and then work on the second. The same rules and deadlines will apply to the second fic as well.

Uh oh. Beta readers.

Yes, you must have a beta reader. Authors can look over their work many times and still miss the obvious. Not to mention we highly doubt you are actually the best writer in the world. All fics must be beta read by another person that is not the author. There are no exceptions to this rule.

If you and your beta don't see eye to eye on something, that's fine. Don't argue or bitch about it, okay? Take the time to give some honest consideration to your betas suggestions, and then you decide what to keep and what to change.

Honey, I'm an artist, not a writer. None of this even applies to me. What am I getting into?

As an artist (traditional or graphics) you are committing to at least one piece of artwork for your assigned fanfiction by the deadline.

What if I don't like the story you've assigned me and/or it doesn't inspire me?

When you sign up, you give us a list of what you like and what you don't. We will do our best to pair you off appropriately. If you aren't into femmeslash, then you won't get a story to create artwork that is all about Aphrodite/Gabrielle sexytimes.

If you really, really aren't inspired, we may be able to do some shuffling. But do try. We'll also be posting cheerleading posts and inspiration posts for you too.

Okay, so what kind of art are you looking for?

Traditional art (skteches, drawings), digital art (done in photoshop and the like), fanmixes, manips, banners, etc. are all acceptable art forms for the Big Bang challenge. We do expect high quality work so if you know you cannot draw, do not offer to do anything traditional. If you know your graphics work isn't up to par, then don't offer to do a manip. Be realistic about your talents. We want our writers to be happy with their artwork.

Great. But I'm not a writer or an artist. I'm a beta reader.

And we love you for existing. Every fic in this fest needs a beta reader to work with the author to keep spelling, grammar, formatting, characterization, etc up to par. Do not be afraid to offer your opinion on a fic. That is your job. If you see an author trying to turn Ares the God of War into a peace-loving sheep herder without some sort of explanation in the fic, then it is your job to tell them, that, no, that isn't how Ares would act. Be critical, but don't be hurtful and we are ace.

This FAQ will be updated as needed.

Preliminary Sign Ups Open
February 15, 2010

This is the official start of the challenge. We will take sign ups for authors, betas, and artists at this time. This is not an official commitment. If, for some reason, you cannot participate/need to drop out, you may do so. However, we do hope that those who do sign up are going to participate.

At this point, writers may begin writing up their fiction.

ETA: I've put up sign ups a little early. This means prelim sign ups will get a little extra time, and authors will have a little extra time on their rough drafts. Win/win?

Preliminary Sign Ups (for authors) Close
March 1, 2010

Sign Ups for authors only end. We will take no more author sign ups after this point. Sign ups for artists and betas will continue. If you are an author, and you missed the preliminary sign ups, don't worry. When official sign ups go up you may sign up then.

Official Sign Ups open
May 15, 2010

For authors, this is when we'd like you to send us a complete draft of your fanfiction. In addition, we'd like a short summary of your story, with some information about the pairings, rating, and the plot. Note: This is NOT the final due date. You have until August to finish your fic and get it beta'd. However, this is when you can see your progress and determine whether you're going to officially participate (i.e. have enough already written to meet the minimum word count).

For traditional artists, this is when we'd like you to tell us officially which pairings and ratings you're willing to illustrate, as well as how many fanarts you are willing to provide. This is so that we can send you anonymous synopses of the fanfics that match, from which you tell us (in order of preference) which you'd like to illustrate. We'll do our best to match everyone as well as we can, but we do welcome open-minded people in this case.

If you're doing graphics/fanxmix/video, you'll tell us how many you're willing to provide and any pairings that you refuse to work with.

At this time, we'll close the preliminary artist sign-ups and beta sign-ups. Everything will be official from here on out!

Official Sign Ups Close
June 1, 2010

For authors, if you do not formally sign up by this date (including providing a complete draft of your fanfiction), your fiction will not qualify for accompanying art, and may not be included in the archive.

Any artists who do not sign up at this point may still be called in to pinch hit if necessary.

Artist Assignments sent out
June 7, 2010

All artists will have received confirmation of the fanfiction that they will be creating art for by this time.

The Final Deadline
August 30, 2010

All completed artwork and fanfiction must be e-mailed to the moderators by midnight GMT.

Archive Goes Live
September 5, 2010

If all goes well, the official archive for the big bang challenge should go live. After this point, you may post your fanfiction where ever you'd like. And we can all gush over the archive and all the hard work that went into the art and fiction created. *thumbs up*
8th-Feb-2010 01:39 pm - [RULES]
Rules for participants in the Xena Big Bang Challenge
Last amendment: 2010 Round

First, you, as a participant (whether it be as a writer, an artist, or a beta reader) are responsible for reading and understanding these rules. Should any infractions occur, not knowing/understand these simple rules will not be a valid excuse. Should you have any questions regarding the rules, an suggestions, or require clarification do not hesitate to ask. Finally, these rules are here not to impede upon creativity or to create some sort of dictatorship within the community. They are here for order, for safety, and for your benefit. Please keep this in mind.

1. All fiction created for this community must include, in some way, a character or characters from the Xenaverse. Aside from this, there is very little that will restrict writers. If you so choose, you can write an AU where Xena dies in a fierce battle only to be reincarnated into the body of the premiere ballet dancer in the Australian ballet in 2020 dancing the lead in Swan Lake with Autolycus as her partner.

In short, aside from including, in some way, the Xenaverse (which shouldn't be too difficult), the subject matter included in the fiction is up to the discretion of the author. The only thing not allowed is RPF (real person fiction). This is a community based off a TV show and fictional characters. It is in no way affiliated with the actors of the show.

2. All pairings are allowed. There will be absolutely no pairing bashing allowed in this community. If you do not like Ares/Xena for whatever reason, then keep it to yourself. The same goes for all pairings. All criticism of fic must be constructive, and that does not mean you are allowed to tell someone that they are delusional for pairing Borias with Joxer. You are allowed your opinion, and you are allowed to disagree with a pairing. You are not, however, allowed to alienate, insult, and demean any person in this challenge for their work.

3. The minimum word count for this challenge is 15, 000 words. All fiction created for this community must meet that word count. It may, however, go over the minimum. Fiction created must also be originally created for this challenge. Pre-existing WsIP may be included at the discretion of the moderators. In roder for your fiction to qualify for the second phase (and to be included in the challenge), it must be 15, 000+ words, completed, and created specifically for this challenge.

4. Preliminary sign ups do not bind you into a contract. You may pull out. The Prelim sign ups are only to get the initial list of people who believe they can write 15,000 words in the time given. Prelim sign ups are only your agreement to try and write up a 15, 000 word rough draft by the deadline given. Second Phase sign ups, however, are your written agreement that you have COMPLETED a rough draft, and are on your way to a finished piece of fanfiction. Committing to the second phase makes you eligible for an artist and a beta reader.

5. All fiction, even in the rough draft state, must contain proper warnings. Any kinks, squicks, trigger material, or material not suited for those under age must be warned for. Any fanfiction that does not comply with this rule will not be eligible for this challenge.

6. Fics and accompanying visual and multimedia works will be the property of the archive for the initial posting period. This means you can't post your fic to your own website or LJ until the challenge ends, and you also can't post pieces of it as you go. No one but your betas and others within the fest as needed should see it before it goes live, and then it will be exclusive to the archive until the end date of the challenge. This doesn't mean it isn't your work, and we'll post them with your name on them, but we'll have exclusive posting rights for that period. After the challenge has ended, however, you are free to post your fiction where ever you like.

7. Fics will be posted with accompanying art, though what constitutes artwork will be variable, and may be comprised of one or more of a number of media. Some examples include traditional drawings and paintings (created using traditional or digital methods), graphic art (manips, for instance), vids, soundtracks, photography, or any other art approach our artists want to use. In short, the artist may use whatever art form they choose to illustrate the fic. If any problems with the artwork arise (i.e. your fiction is about how Gabrielle and Eli ran off to get hitched together and are now running a hospice in Rome and your artist comes up with a sketch of Xena fishing) it will be dealt with by the moderators. Artists may be asked to revise if their work does not fit the tone/plot/etc of the story they have been assigned.

8. You have committed to a deadline. As a participant, we are not asking the impossible of you. As has been said, you are not setting your story in stone by signing up originally. If you drop out before the second phase, just inform a mod. No harm, no foul. If you want to be part of the second phase, but you need a couple days extra, talk to a mod. Things happen, and sometimes deadlines can't be met. We are willing to give extensions. Furthermore, should you happen to be part of the second phase (writers who have finished a rough draft, artists, and beta readers), it is even more important that you contact a mod immediately if any issues arise.

9. Moderators reserve the right to modify and add to this list as necessary. Any changes will be made known to the members of the challenge.
